Breakfast at McDonald’s

It’s been over a year since I’ve had a McDonald’s burger and fries.  But, admittedly, I will swing through the drive-thru for breakfast every few months.

Eat by Stars this week takes a peek at what I should be ordering off McDonald’s breakfast menu.

Fruit and Maple Oatmeal® 

Per serving: calories 290, fat 4.5g, carbs 57g (sugars 32g), protein 5g

It’s oatmeal so logically it should be good for you.  And, compared to most McDonald’s fare, it is. But, the “maple” makes me think syrup.  And I’m right.  An unnecessary amount of sugar is added.  Typical.

Egg McMuffin®

Per sandwich: calories 300, fat 12g, carbs 30g, protein 18g (salt 34% DV)

The best of the bunch.  Not ideal for an every morning staple, but once a week or  so (sans hashbrown) is fine.

Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit®

Per sandwich: calories 420, fat 23g, carbs 37g, protein 15g, (salt 48% DV)

Definitely a treat.  The biscuit is the difference.  Biscuits=tasty + bad for you.

Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Mc Griddle®

Per sandwich: calories 420, fat 18g, carbs 48g, protein 15g (salt 46% DV)

The McGriddle has the same calories as the buiscuit but trades carbs for fat.  Not a great trade.


Per hashbrown: calories 150, fat 9g, carbs 15g, protein 1g (salt 13% DV)

I contend they’re the tastiest fast food hash brown.  And, like all fast food hashbrowns, bring the same nutritional punch as French fries.  Which is to say, none at all.

Cinnamon Melts®

Per serving: calories 460, fat 19g, carbs 66g, protein 6g

Like your breakfast gooey?  These will fit that bill.  And not much else.

Big Breakfast with Hotcakes®

Per breakfast: 1090 calories, fat 56g, carbs 111g, protein 36, (salt 90%)

Well damn.  This thing is a monster.  Look, I love breakfast platters.  But if you’re itching to indulge in eggs, sausage, a biscuit, and hot cakes at least get to a Waffle House or something.

Yes, I copied these pics from McDonald’s website.  I assure you these products don’t look so perfect in real life.  Unfortunately, my aversion to fast food keeps from getting actual photos.  Sincere apologies.

  1. I’m so mad that you still eat at McDonalds. Vote with your Dollars!!!!! Please! It’s the only way to stand up to food companies that are trying to kill us.

    • I believe it’s dangerous to view things in good vs evil terms. Is McDonald’s a place to avoided? Absolutely. But I believe eating an Egg McMuffin once every couple of months is reasonable.

      In giving advice and information to readers, I try to keep things as realistic as possible. Would the obesity crisis be helped if all McDonald’s closed tomorrow? Possibly. Will that happen? No. I find it best to give advice based on that reality. Folks are gonna eat at McDonald’s. Teaching them to limit their visits is, in my view, the best way to vote with my dollars.

  2. Also – Why don’t you list the ingredients – the calories don’t mean anything once you see the ingredients in that crap!

    • In my Eat by Stars description, I list the most important consideration in eating healthy the length of the ingredient list. When the ingredient list is troubling I always mention it in my analysis of each food.

      I don’t include the entire ingredient list to reduce information overload. That’s my goal here.

  3. But these are the ingredients in an EGG McMuffin… There’s over 50…. How is supporting something like this even once in a while voting with your dollars? You are still spending money at McDonalds. I am saddened and disappointed at your approach for change.

    • I find it curious you would be saddened by an occasional Egg McMuffin. Personally, I don’t believe making folks feel guilty or somehow inferior about their food choices is the way to bring about dialog and understanding. Most people enjoy McDonald’s fare. It does me no good to belittle them their choices. My goal is to get folks to eat better, not perfect.

      I appreciate and respect your passion and points of view. I certainly think they are valid and contribute to advancing your beliefs. It’s clear we have differing styles. I’d hope we can agree to disagree on this point.
